Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Xian
Upon arrival at Xian airport, meet and transfer to the Sheraton Hotel Xian - 5* for two nights.
Day 2
Xian (B/L/SD)
Spend the day exploring Xian’s ancient monuments including the site of the 2,000-year-old Terra Cotta Warriors. Next, enjoy a sumptuous Dumpling Banquet lunch. This is followed by a visit to Great Mosque and a walk through the Muslim Quarter. In the evening, step back in time as you experience special Tang Dynasty dinner and dance shows. Later, see the sparkling City Wall that’s lit up at night.
Day 3
Xian - Lanzhou (B/L/D)
Fly to Lanzhou.  Upon arrival, visit the Gansu Museum and see the famed "flying horse".  Check-in at the Legend Hotel - 4* for two nights.
Day 4
Lanzhou (B/L/D)
Today, visit the Binglingsi Grottoes, also known as the Bingling Temples, a series of grottes with Buddhist sculputures carved into the caves and caverns in a canyon along the Yellow River.  Also take a boat ride and tour White Pagoda Park and Water Wheel Garden. 
Day 5
Lanzhou - Jiayuguan (B/L/D)
Fly to Jiayuguan City, most popular for the nearby Jiayu Pass, the largest and the most intact pass of the Great Wall of China.  Upon arrival, tour the Wei and Jin underground tomb.  Overnight at the Garden Hotel - 4*.
Day 6
Jiayuguan - Dunhuang (B/L/D)
See the Great Wall Museum and visit the Jiayuguan fort followed by a drive to Dunhuang, a town dating back 2,000 years and once an important caravan stop on the Silk Road. Take a walk through the local night market.  Stay two nights at The Silk Road hotel - 4*.
Day 7
Dunhuang (B/L/D)
Explore the magnificent Mogao Grottoes, where devout Buddhists have spent their time building the 492 grottoes since 366A.D. These caves contain some of the most important Buddhist artin the world. Next, visit Ming Sha Hill and take a camel ride. See Crescent Moon Spring, nestled among the mountain-high sand dunes of the Gobi Desert.  Also visit the "Echoing" sand dune and take a camel ride. 
Day 8
Dunhuang - Urumqi (B/L/D)
This morning, drive west across the desert to the amazing Yumen Pass.  Visit the old city and then fly to Urumqi.  Overnight at the Sheraton Hotel  - 4*.
Day 9
Urumqi - Turpan (B/L/D)
Drive the Silk Road to Turpan, a city 1,600 meters below sea level. This area is renowned for its wonderful crops of grapes and melons. Tour the historical ruins of Jiaohe City including the underground water supply and irrigation system and the Museum of Karez.  Check into the Tuha Petroleum Hotel 4*.
Day 10
Turpan - Urumqi (B/L/D)
Take a short ride to Bizaklik, home of the Thousand Buddha Caves, built during the Tang Dynasty.  Also visit Sugong Ta (Suliman’s Minaret), an exquisite mosque built in 1776 and the Flaming Mountain. Have lunch with a local family prior to returning back to Urumqi.
Day 11
Urumqi (B/L/D)
Morning visits include Urumqi's Heavenly Lake and the Provincial Museum.  In the afternoon, travel to the Nanshan Grasslands and visit a local minority family.
Day 12
Depart Urumqi (B/L/D)
Head to the airport.

Travel Guide

Entry Regulations:
Passports must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into China. A visa is necessary to enter China. You will need to fill out an application form, 1 passport size photo and your passport to obtain an entry visa.

Please check with your country’s Foreign Affairs office to find out about entry requirements for non-Canadians and Americans.

Climate:
The size of China ensures that its climate is extremely diverse, ranging from tropical in the south to sub arctic in its northern latitudes. Winter in the north, between December and March, is bitterly cold and very dry, with temperatures in Beijing dropping as low as -4ºF (-20ºC). During summer, May to August, rain falls and temperatures soar. In central China the Yangtze River valley experiences long, humid and hot summers between April and October, while in winter temperatures drop below freezing. In south China, around Guangzhou, summer brings typhoons and high temperatures between July and September. Winters are short and chilly.


Currency:
The Yuan Renminbi is the basic unit of currency in mainland China, the Hong Kong Dollar in Hong Kong and Macau Pataca in Macau. At present, the exchange rate is CNY6.77 to CAD$1 and CNY6.53 to USD$1; As exchange rates fluctuate each day, please check the current exchange rate near your date of travel.

Electricity:
The current used in China is 220AC 50Hz.

Tip: This system may differ from the one you use at home. If it is different, please purchase an adaptor from a travel store near you, to take advantage of the power ports in your hotel room.

Language:
The official language in China is Mandarin along with hundreds of local dialects.

Health Requirement:
Normally, vaccinations are not longer required unless one travels from or via an infected area. Check with your local health authority for further requirements.

Airport Facilities and Tax:
China has various ports of entry. The international airport in the capital city is the Beijing Capital International Airport.  Departure taxes are formulated into the price of the airline ticket.

Shopping:
Bargaining is common in China. Other than Friendship stores where prices are fixed, shoppers should bargain anywhere they shop. Friendship stores are popular with most foreign visitors as they are well stocked and can arrange shipping.

Cuisine:
Chinese cuisine has a long history and is one of China’s cultural treasures. Local flavors and snacks and special dishes have formed according to regions, local products, climate, historical factors and eating habits.
